Schmidt has been with the team for nearly 22 years and had been the vice president of scouting since 2007. He said the timing was right for him to step into the GM role.

Despite the downward direction, Schmidt wouldn’t say the Rockies are in a rebuilding stage and stressed that the organization has always developed players instead of making big free-agent signings.

“That’s who we are,” he said. “We’re going to rely on the majority of our players [being] acquired through the draft. We’ve done it a little bit, the free-agent part, but a majority of our players are going to come through the draft and internationally.”
